CUMBERLAND HODGE
and his fights with the devil

Hodgson Casson, also known as Cumberland Hodge, was one of the best known Methodist preachers in the North of England in the first half of the 19th Century. Undeniably eccentric, he was also extremely successful. I have collected together all the material I could find on his ministry in this area, including some of the many anecdotes which have been told about him.

Anecdotes from the ministry of Hodgson Casson

excerpts from Casson's biography:
Christianity in Earnest as exemplified in the life and labours of the Rev. Hodgson Casson
by A. Steele, published by Simpkin, Marshall & Co., London, 1853

The Great Fight at Gateshead between Cumberland Hodge and Brimstone Harry
by Dr. Doublespur
- this poem by one of Casson's opponents in Gateshead was meant to mock his ministry, but ends up almost celebrating it. It is the devil's lament for what Casson has done to his followers in Gateshead.
